Remote work isn’t all pajama bottoms and flexible schedules. If you’ve ever had a teammate ghost a deadline because “their Wi-Fi was acting up” or sat through yet another Zoom call that should’ve been an email, you know the struggle is real.

After managing remote teams for five years (and making every mistake in the book), here’s what actually works.
1. Talk Too Much
That thing you explained perfectly in yesterday’s email? Half your team didn’t read it. The other half skimmed it while making coffee.
Pro tip:
- Send important stuff in two places (Slack + email)
- Repeat key points in meetings (people need to hear things 3x to remember)
- Assume everyone’s distracted (because let’s face it — they are)
2. “ASAP” Means Nothing
We’ve all been burned by vague deadlines. “When you get a chance” = “I’ll do it when my inbox screams at me.”
Fix it:
- “Final draft by Thursday 3pm EST” — specific AF
